EXPLORING THEMES with....Nana Owusu-Ansah: PEOPLE

I love photographing people and trying to capture their personalities and emotions through a single snapshot. Last summer I was particularly keen to shoot black women, as being one myself, I am becoming increasingly "woke" to what being a black woman means in society today. I thought it appropriate to snap a few shots of the beautiful and strong black women I am lucky to have in my life, and included a self portrait in my natural hair, a sight not even my closest of friends are used to or worst yet, have ever seen. I chose to edit the photos in black and white as the contrast not only highlights the complex tonalities that black skin has, but the contrasting colours of black and white are also pertinent to racial tensions which still exist in society today.
