Mahjigh (pronounced Maj-Eye), is an Alternative R&B artist who’s latest single “Opinion” highlights the importance of focusing on your own thoughts as opposed to letting people’s opinion’s over-influence you.

WFA sat down with him for a brief look into his artistry.

Describe to us who Mahjigh is.

I guess that question is probably the hardest to answer, I feel like I'm the awkward combination of all my mistakes [and someone] who just happens to heal using music. I'm just a person, a hopeless romantic who uses music as therapy.

When we first heard this song, it gave us The Internet — Ego Death vibes but with a UK twist — talk us through how you found your sound and who you’re influenced by.

Honestly I feel like I’m still looking for my “sound”, I’ve always considered myself a genre hopper but lately I seem to be really drawn to this sound or form of expression musically. I only recently started listening to and creating  alternative R&B as it’s been resonating with me way more lately. I guess the genre really speaks to my emotions and just happens to sync with my artistic process.

“Opinion” is definitely one a lot of people can resonate with — talk us through the story of how it came to be.

I’ve spent my entire life being told I’m being oversensitive or over-reacting when I wasn’t; everyone feels like their “opinion” is something everyone should accept and be happy to receive. But I feel like people like me feel like we aren't allowed to express that other people's opinions hurt sometimes, we aren't proud of it but we shouldn’t  be ashamed of that fact either.

What it really comes down to is the fact that criticising comes so easily to everyone when it doesn’t hurt to give some positive energy especially when it comes to someone's passion.

If you were to put visuals together for this song, how would you visually represent the lyrics/subject matter?

I think I would make it into a short film with “Opinion” as more of a soundtrack; maybe showing different types of artists putting their hearts and souls into different creations and fighting the feeling to give up and persevering through to make something amazing.

How does this release fit into your story for 2021?

“Opinion” for me feels like telling myself it’s ok to make the kind of music that I actually like. This song isn’t for everyone it’s for anyone that needs it because to be honest I needed this song to keep me going. I hope this song is the start of my journey into evolving the UK alternative R&B scene and really finding a way to heal.

Finally, what does success mean to you?

In the grand scheme of things success is just having even one person message, comment or whatever saying “This song really resonated with me”; knowing my music not only helps to heal me but is able to reach someone else means so much.
